Poem: INNOCENT SOULS… - Olanrewaju Ogunubi

INNOCENT SOULS…

We that abode in castles far beyond poverty
We that feast upon the wealth of the poor
We that parade your streets in seductive automobiles
We that coat our virtuous skins with gaudy garments
We the innocent souls of the land!

We that impoverish the impoverished,
and enrich the enriched
We that build death traps,
and high ways to eternity
We that build colleges,
meant for advancing illiteracy
We the innocent souls of the land!

We the poor servants of the public
Serving the masses in reverse order
We the light-fingered solon
Harvesting the fruit of victory
We the custodian of public funds
From whose eyes your billions disappeared
We the innocent souls of the land!

We that never relent in making promises
Though we abide not by them
We that never relent in formulating policies
Though they be retrogressive
We that never relent in holding conferences
Though they be lees effective
We the innocent souls of the land!

We the patriots that shed the bloods of tyrants
We the saints that chastise sinners
Even when they sin not
We the law-abiding natives; guilty of all crimes
We the innocent souls of the land!

We that beg your vote every four-days
We the evidence of “true” democracy
We the poor servants of the public
We are the innocent souls of the land!
